The region in the south-west of Kazakhstan was previously called Mangyshlak. It is located east of the Caspian Sea on the Mangyshlak (Mangistau) plateau, it borders in the north-east with Atyrau and Aktobe regions, in the south with Turkmenistan and in the east with the Republic of Karakalpakstan as part of Uzbekistan.
